Sandboarding in Morocco or Dune surfing, has been a popular pastime for Nomad and desert children in Morocco for many years.
Thinking back to their childhood, the adults will tell you that they used to use a wide range of self made materials to do Sandboarding at Erg Chebbi.
Morocco has various desert areas, but only one area really stands out for sandboarding in Morocco, and that is Erg Chebbi.
Located a few Km outside the desert village of Merzouga, Erg Chebbi is a massive dune of the Moroccan Sahara desert.
Sandboarding at Erg Chebbi
Once at Erg Chebbi, the Dune Surfing can begin! But don’t forget… first you have to climb up the Dunes!
The higher you climb, the better the ride down, the faster your board will take you.
And what goes up, must, most of the time, come down. You hope to ride down the Sand Dune as fast as you can to make the effort of climbing up to the top totally worth it!
Getting to Erg Chebbi
There are two ways of getting from Merzouga to Erg Chebbi:
- Camel trek from Merzouga into the desert, usually reaching Erg Chebbi within 1 and a half hours.
- 4×4 vehicle, riding around and over the Dunes to reach the base camps of Erg Chebbi.
Costs of Sandboarding at Erg Chebbi
Usually, the cost of Sandboarding at Erg Chebbi is minimal, with the nomad’s who maintain the boards asking for just a small rental fee of 50 Dirham
One hour of Sandboarding would usually be enough for the average person to have some fun and take some great photos for their Facebook profile!
